CDL scooped top honours at this year's Green IT Awards for Recycling Project of the Year. This project was conducted with COOP Travel and involved the refresh of over 350 sites nationwide.
Comment from Director Paul Gibbons:
"This is a major achievement to have won the Green IT Awards for the second year running and confirms we are still at the forefront of our industry. For this particular project we concentrated on the environmental impact and found that cost saving measures worked hand in hand with reduction in carbon emissions and impact on the environment. A number of the initiatives we were trialling have been incorporated in to our daily working practices."
In May 2011 BBC aired a Panorama documentary highlighting the illegal export of WEEE that was shown to have made its way to waste sites to include Nigeria and Ghana. This alleged illegal transportation of redundant IT equipment from the UK to Africa has raised questions about how any organisation can ensure that its redundant equipment is recycled or reused in a legal and morally responsible manner. The program can be viewed at the following link:

Comment from Director Jean-Pierre Naylor:
"This is yet another program that highlights the concerns we have harboured for a while regarding the increasing number of less than scrupulous IT disposal companies currently operating. Whilst the Environment Agency are responsible for the monitoring of waste transfers, they are facing an almost impossible battle due to the ever increasing scale of waste production and these cowboy operators. Unfortunately this incident is not a one off, which is why companies should be extremely diligent when selecting their IT disposal partner."
Last week, eleven people and four companies were named in court as part of the biggest investigation yet carried out by the Environment Agency into the illegal export of electrical waste from the UK to developing countries.
The EA's press release is available at the following link: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/news/124867.aspx.
We have recently received numerous emails and calls relating to a recent BBC3 programme, “Blood, Sweat & Luxuries: Gold and E-Waste” on 11 May 2010, where IT equipment from several high profile public sector organisations was shown to have made its way to a waste site in Ghana, where young children were seen scavenging for recoverable electronic components to sell for scrap value. This alleged illegal transportation of redundant IT equipment from the UK to Africa has raised questions about how any organisation can ensure that its redundant equipment is recycled or reused in a legal and morally responsible manner. Some key points regarding our processing and export policy:
As of April 2010, The Environment agency has reclassified TFT and LCD monitors including laptop screens as Hazardous Waste. Detailed information can be found at the following link:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/Flatscreen_Brief_-_final.pdf
What does this mean to you as a business? In addition to CRT monitors you will have to notify your IT disposal company as to how many TFT monitors and laptops you are disposing of. It will be your IT disposal company's responsibility to ensure all WEEE documentation is completed as per the new legislation.
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor - Director
"Since we launched our on site hard drive destruction service in 2008 our crush box has proved extremely popular. We have now taken delivery of our new eDR Hard Disk Crusher, which is the only CESG approved device of its type available"
We are now processing over 500,000kg of WEEE per quarter with over 70% of equipment being refurbished for reuse.
Until now any company that disposed of more than 150kg of hazardous waste (approx 12 CRT monitors) per annum needed to register with the Environment Agency and pay for a 12 month license costing £18.
As of April 6th 2009 the EA has raised the limit to 500kg (approx 40 CRT monitors) resulting in cost savings for many small to medium businesses. Larger businesses with smaller satellite sites will also benefit from this change.
On the 1 April 2009 new charges came into effect for:
* Environmental permitting (EP)
* Radioactive Substances Regulation (RAS)
* Discharges to Controlled Water (CFD)
* EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS)
Updated charging schemes for 2009/10 are available and you can access them through the relevant scheme pages. New fact sheets are also available explaining changes that have occurred this year. You can also access the fact sheets through the relevant scheme pages.

Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor - Director
"Following successful trials we have now launched an on site hard drive destruction service. Although primarily aimed at the NHS it is available to all our customers. Our new service allows us to destroy customer's hard drives and media on their site. Very few of our competitors offer this service, especially at the price point we have introduced."
CDL has complimented its existing fleet of 9 vans with a new purpose built 3.5 tonne tail lift. The new Isuzu has been specially designed to take maximum height racks standing up and any other large equipment. Not resorting to 7.5 tonne lorries has realised significant cost savings which are now being passed on to our customers.
Comment from Ian Henry - Transport Manager
"The new tail lift provides most of the benefit of a 7.5 tonne vehicle with the reduced costs associated with running a 3.5 tonne vehicle. It is a welcome addition to the fleet and has already covered 5,000 miles in its first 4 weeks."
Comment from Mark Gibbons - Facilities Manager
"Our accreditation has now been extended for a further 12 months. This accreditation is not given out easily and underlies our continued commitment to the well being of both our staff and customers and our working practices."
This an increase of 1,000,000kg since January 2008.
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor - Director
"Following discussions regarding the safe disposal of IT equipment CDL was asked to be interviewed on air to provide advice to the general public as to the best way to dispose of equipment and also how to safeguard important information. We hope the advice was of use."
CDL's 'annual management meeting' is fast approaching. This will be interspersed with a 'little' catfish fishing in Spain over a long weekend. Fellow director Neil Brayne is so scared of flying that he is driving there and back. Even through the trip is in May he is setting off on April 27th on his intergalactic tour of Europe.
Comment from last year and current record holder at 115lbs – Jean-Pierre Naylor
"My wife informs me that 5 days is not a long weekend"
Comment from last year’s sore loser – Paul Gibbons
"I wish I was as good a fisherman as J-P. He’s the best"
Comment from our European travel correspondent – Neil Brayne
"I hope I get there..."
CDL offices have relocated from within the main warehouse freeing up valuable space. In addition the mezzanine level has been extended to include a dedicated server farm and a further 60 configuration bays.
Comment from Neil Brayne - Director
"This relocation of the office will increase our productivity by 20%, plus we now have over 200 separate data erase bays. With the additional staff we have taken on we should now be able to process 20,000 items per month. More importantly the other 2 directors are now a safe distance away!"
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor - Director
"To put that in perspective if you laid the equipment out it would stretch from Manchester to London or fill 6,000 transit vans"
Comment from Paul Gibbons - Director
"You certainly wouldn’t want that little lot in your back garden"
CDL has been awarded the contract to manage the IT disposal for South Bedfordshire District Council. The contract is to run for 18 months with an optional 12 months extension.
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor - Director
"We believe this is a key appointment for CDL and we are looking forward to working with South Bedfordshire District Council."
Comment from Robert Wood – Head of Strategic ICT at South Bedfordshire District Council
"South Bedfordshire District Council takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously, particularly with regard towards redundant IT equipment. We look forward to working with CDL following their success in our recent competitive tender for such disposals."
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor – Director
"This is another great achievement for CDL and reinforces our position as one of the UK’s leading IT disposal companies. More importantly it sends a clear message to our customers that we are committed to adopting best practices within our industry and will continue to do so."
18th July 2007 – CDL awarded Preferred Supplier Status for Siemens Group
Comment from Jean-Pierre Naylor – Director
"This has certainly not been easy having taken over 12 months to secure. We have over that period devised a bespoke service tailored exactly to Siemens needs, which will provide them with an extremely cost effective service for the next 3 years."
Comment from Paul Gibbons – Director
"This is another step forward for CDL which will allow us to expand our service offering and target new areas. I understand we are one of only a handful of IT disposal companies to have attained this status."
Comment from Paul Gibbons – Director
"CDL has been providing IT disposal services to Liverpool City Council for the past 3 years and to have been awarded the contract for a further 3 years is fantastic news, especially in light of the competition involved. We devised a bespoke service that Liverpool City Council felt best met their needs in terms of cost and scope of service."
Comment from Mark Gibbons – Facilities Manager
"This is a great achievement for CDL as this accreditation is not given out easily. It underlies our commitment to the well being of both our staff and our customers and we are proud to have achieved this accreditation."
